Education and Early Care
Education and Early Care Task Force brings together parents, teachers, and community leaders to work for increased childcare, school readiness, and improved education for Bridgeport children.
Co-chairs are Hernan Illingworth, parent leader and Karen King, Executive Director of McGivney Center.
2010 - 2011 Action Agenda
- BCAC will release its report on teacher turnover, recruitment and retention in the Bridgeport schools and then follow up on the recommendations highlighted in the report.
- The Task Force will also advocate for policy and practice changes to help reduce early childhood teacher turnover and reduce out-of-school suspensions.
- We will analyze the impact of deep education budget cuts expected this coming school year on class size. In addition, the Task Force will take on a new activity on principal and teacher accountability.
- We will research best practices in other school districts to evaluate teachers and principals, as well as the teacher/principal evaluation process used here in the Bridgeport schools.
Impact: Reducing teacher turnover at all grade levels, including early childhood, and reducing out of-school suspensions, are critical to closing the achievement gap. Small class sizes and a highly qualified teaching staff are also imperative.
